Coming together as a community in the face of adversity is something New Braunfels has gotten very good at over the years as we prepare for and recover from the many high water events that have affected our city and county. Our friends and neighbors have also always been there for us to assist in these efforts with money, supplies and infrastructure needs. A few weeks ago, when Hurricane Harvey was first forecast to hit South Texas, we all started to prepare for the worst…thinking it was going to come right at us. When this huge, powerful storm made landfall and started making its historical march along the Texas Gulf Coast we were able to breathe a sigh of relief, but our many neighbors to the South and Southeast were put directly in its path.
That is when the compassionate people of New Braunfels and Comal County were able to return the hospitality we have received from our fellow Texans so many times. I have never been more proud of my community and state than during this historic battle with the elements. Hurricane Harvey affected probably more Texans over the largest area than any natural disaster has ever in the great history of Texas.
It was very heart-warming to watch and see all the different groups of people come together via social media, religious groups, scout groups, schools and businesses. People that had no connection with people or areas just reaching out and lending a helping hand.
I personally have been able to donate and contribute to many groups from New Braunfels that have headed to the affected areas to help where people need it the most. Just being able to go to some of these areas and serve a warm meal to people who just need a few minutes of rest and nutrition makes all the difference in the world. When your whole world has been turned upside down, sometimes a smiling face, a change of pace for a few minutes and a friendly ear to listen can really brighten a person’s day.
I have watched many friends in the Houston area get through the storm and start the recovery effort to bring that vibrant city back to life. As the water was rising in so many areas of Southeast Texas it reminds you that homes and belongings are not the most important thing. The spirit of Texans coming together just makes these efforts stronger.
I was amazed at the generosity of businesses and corporations during the storm and recovery. Companies like HEB and Buc-ee’s going above and beyond to help the communities that they do business in just proves that Texans take care of Texans. There was no concerns or issues about race or social status…just helping your fellow Texans.
Like I said, I’m proud of New Braunfels, Comal County and all our fellow Texans for coming together. As the old motto says, “Don’t Mess with Texas!”
