John Moritz

Austin American-Statesman

John Mortiz has covered Texas government and politics for more than 30 years, 27 of them in Austin.

Over the course of his career, John has covered two major-party national conventions, about a dozen state conventions and countless statewide elections.

In addition, he has been dispatched around to Texas to cover such natural disasters as hurricanes and tornadoes, and such less-than-natural calamities as mass shootings and issues related to the ongoing crisis at Texas’ southern border.

John was part of the USA TODAY Networks team of reporters and photojournalists that was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting that documented the implications associated with then-President Trump’s effort to build a wall along the border.
